Medical Billing Professional Level - Class Descriptions  

  • Medical Terminology   

This class is a prerequisite for all Medical Billing, Medical Transcription and EHR Medical Records and training. (Class code 1001code-PRO-1201MB)  

 

A thorough study of the structure and use of the medical language. This class trains the student to understand medical terms well enough to work and communicate fluently in the healthcare setting. Terms and complex medical processes are accessible and easy to understand at all learning levels with an approach that explains terms in the context of anatomy and physiology, as well as how the body works in health and disease. 

 

Subjects include prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and combining forms.  Learn to accurately spell, pronounce, and define medical terms pertaining to human anatomy, major disease processes, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, laboratory tests, abbreviations, and drugs. Students  develop the ability to recognize and use medical terms, as well as the ability to use printed and online medical references such as medical dictionaries.

  • Medical Billing and Insurance Class

The Billing study begins with introduction to the history of medicine and healthcare delivery; healthcare delivery systems are discussed. The ownership and organizational structure of health care facilities, licensure, regulation, and accreditation.  Examines the organization and structure of acute care facilities, ambulatory and outpatient care settings, behavioral health, home care, hospice, and long-term care facilities.  Includes a discussion of managed care, federal, state, and local health care systems.

 

Professional Billing also includes medical office procedures.  A thorough study of medical office reimbursement processes and procedures.  Covers billing and insurance, contracts, and regulatory requirements, coding and claims processing for health plans, medical office management software, submission of paper and electronic claims, auditing and monitoring the coding process, and identification of fraudulent billing practices.

 

Study healthcare data content & structure.  Covers the purpose, structure and content of medical records used for inpatient, outpatient, and alternative care settings.  Examines medical record storage, numbering and filing systems, data collection, indexes and registers.  Provides an overview of the legal aspects of health information, including state and federal law, confidentiality of information, the HIPAA privacy and security provisions, and requirements for release of protected health information.

 

Reimbursement Methodologies.  A study of reimbursement and payment systems for all types of healthcare systems and managed care. Includes prospective payment systems, charge master maintenance, DRGs, APCs, ASC Groups, RBRVS, third-party payers, EOB, Quality Improvement Organizations, managed care/capitation, and compliance.

 

Textbooks, Materials and Testing: Medical Insurance Online for Insurance - Handbook for the Medical Office (User Guide, Access Code, Textbook, and Workbook Package), 11th Edition.  The following three books are included in either billing or coding.  Billing students study the essentials of coding.

 

  1. Medical Coding Online for Step-by-Step Medical Coding 2011 (User Guide, Access Code, Textbook, 2011 ICD-9-CM for Hospitals, Volumes 1, 2 & 3 Standard Edition, 2011 HCPCS Level II Standard Edition and 2011 CPT Standard Edition Package.
  2. 2011 HCPCS Level II Standard Edition.  Elsevier Publishing and the American Medical Association partnered to co-publish this HCPCS Level II reference by Carol J. Buck!  Code efficiently and optimize reimbursement with 2011 HCPCS Level II (Standard Edition). This student reference presents the latest Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes in a convenient format that helps you learn how to ensure compliance with coding regulations and confidently locate information on specific codes, manage supply reimbursement, report patient data, and more.  Needed for Billing majors as well.
  3. Step-by-Step Medical Coding 2011 Edition (User Guide & Access Code).  Learn to code accurately and efficiently.  Medical Coding Online 2011 complements Carol J. Buck's Step-by-Step Medical Coding 2011 Edition textbook with interactive learning. Also required for billing students. 
  • Professional Medical Billing Program with test-out for medical terminology

Professional Medical Billing for those capable of testing out of medical terminology. This option allows the student to skip medical terminology.  For a description of the remaining portion of the class, refer to Medical Billing and Insurance above.

 

Will I Be Certified When I Finish?

Yes.  Med Workshop provides Professional Certification Forms.  Medical Billers are not required to have State Certification.  No school can provide you with State Certification. Official certification can be only be obtained by completing an exam given by the government certifying agency; one does not exist for Medical Billing or Medical Transcription at this time.
